Floor Pillows are Soft Movable Furniture

Floor pillows are large, comfortable pieces of furniture that can easily be moved out of the way or dragged to wherever people congregate. Ours range in size and shape, but generally speaking at least one side will be as long as 30" - 36". For those made from reclaimed fur, the back will be a solid heavy fabric, not fur, as fur slips along a floor and also the contact eventually damages the hairs. Textile floor pillows, like all our other pillows, will generally be the same fabric both sides, unless specified. No cheap backings. Most pillows are zippered for easy cleaning. Fur is hand-stiched closed along one side. This seam can easily be reopened for cleaning; we will reclose it for you for a small fee, or a fur cleaner can do that for you. Fur pillows repel dirt and dust quite effectively and should not require cleaning.

We use clean feather filling, unless requested otherwise, which we sometimes boost with either foam or organic materials for springiness. We also offer organic bamboo filling for an extra surcharge of $20. We have experimented with new natural fillings such as kapok, bamboo and natural latex, but we currently feel that not only are these materials still very expensive, they also do not perform nearly well enough - they are hard, lumpy, very heavy or feel like bad foam. These are well-known issues in the industry. We are eagerly waiting for the second generation of sustainable fillings to solve some of the problems of the first. Please ask us if you prefer bamboo or a combination of bamboo and feather or foam.

Authentic Japanese Indigo Shibori Floor Pillows

These are reversible feather-filled floor pillows, all approx 31" x 32".

Shibori is the Japanese technique of tied resist, an old and very sophisticated form of tye dye. These large textile squares were produced at one of the last studios in Japan still doing their own authentic indigo-dyeing using shibori methods. Each pillow top is made from a collectible square of shibori - these were produced for decorative purposes or for fancy furoshiki. The other side of each pillow is made from an authentic japanese indigo "noren" or doorway curtain, in identical indigo tones.

These pillows are substantial enough to be considered furniture. They are well-stuffed, reinforced and sturdy. While feather-filled, they have a small foam core for additional comfort and a small amount of springiness.
